Canadian Hemlock Sauna

The timber beneath the warmth. Why every Gravity sauna is built from nothing less than premium Canadian hemlock.

Canadian hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is widely regarded as the gold standard in sauna timber — and with good reason. Its cellular structure, aromatic profile, and physical properties make it uniquely suited to the thermal demands of regular sauna use. Every Gravity Wellness sauna is built from premium-grade Canadian hemlock, hand-selected for grain consistency and structural quality.

Unlike pine or spruce, which have a relatively high resin content, hemlock is naturally low in resins. This means that even at temperatures approaching 100°C, the wood does not exude sticky sap or produce the acrid smell associated with cheaper sauna timbers. The scent profile of heated hemlock is clean, neutral, and subtly warm — characteristics that experienced sauna users consistently prize.

Dimensionally, hemlock is one of the most stable softwoods available. Its tight, straight grain minimises the expansion and contraction that occurs during each heating and cooling cycle. This preserves the integrity of tongue-and-groove joints over years of daily use, preventing the warping and splitting that can afflict lower-grade sauna builds.

Hemlock is also exceptionally smooth against bare skin. Its moderate density and even surface finish mean that splinters — a genuine nuisance in cheaper pine constructions — are effectively eliminated. This matters considerably when you are sitting or lying against the wood in minimal clothing.

At Gravity Wellness, we source exclusively from certified sustainable forestry operations. Each board is selected for consistent grain, appropriate moisture content, and freedom from knots or surface defects in contact areas. The result is a sauna that performs better, ages more gracefully, and feels superior to use than comparable constructions in lesser timber.

No treatment or oiling is required — hemlock's natural properties are sufficient for long-term performance. Over time, the interior will develop a gentle patina from use, deepening the visual warmth of the cabinet.
